Introducing Rhys Alexander!

James and I were surprised and overjoyed to welcome our baby boy Rhys Alexander on July 1st. Born at 10:37am, 5lbs 15oz (2.69kg), 17" (43cm), three weeks early but perfect in every way!

My birth story turned out better than I could've hoped. I was woken by my water breaking while at home in bed at 3am on Monday, July 1st. After waking James, I made my way to the bathroom and sat on the toilet while fluid continued leaking, followed soon after by my bloody show. The contractions came on quickly and strongly, about every 5 minutes and lasting 1-2 minutes. I made my way back to the bed and continued contracting while poor James ran around the house like a headless chicken throwing things in our hospital bag, feeding our dog and making sure we had everything we needed. He'd leave me for a few minutes and before he had a chance to do anything I was screaming for him to come back and help me through another contraction. By 5am my contractions had increased in intensity and were only 4 minutes apart so I called the hospital and was told to come in immediately. As I still had my cervical stitch in place, it was important to have that removed a.s.a.p. to prevent any complications with baby boy decending into the birth canal and for my labour to progress naturally.

James and I arrived at the hospital at around 5:30am and I was admitted to the birthing suite and examined. My OB was called in and within minutes had removed my cervical stitch, stating that my cervix was measuring 1cm. The stitch had prevented it from dilating but once removed it could open and dilate easily. My contractions became extremely painful so I moved to the shower and while seated, had my husband and mum massage my back and run warm water over me to help ease the pain. A little while later I felt a lot of pressure and was moved back to the bed for an examination that revealed my cervix had dilated to 7cm! My mum stayed by my side whispering words of encouragement as James made his way to the business end beside our Obstetrician, taking his place to assist in the delivery of our baby boy. Within an hour my cervix had dilated to 10cm, my legs were around my ears and I was being instructed by every man and his dog to PUSH!! It took around 6 good goes of it before we saw a crop of hair and the top of little man's head. By the next push his head was out! And after one final push and an obscene amount of excrutiating pain unlike anything I've ever felt in my entire life later, our beautiful baby boy Rhys Alexander was born. Delivered by my husband James and placed on my chest immediately for skin to skin. Words can't explain the overwhelming emotions that took over me as our eyes met for the first time. It was love at first sight!

Despite being so small and barely full term, Rhys didn't need any medical intervention and had no complications or health issues at all. James cut the cord and we both just stared at our perfect little man in amazement for quite some time before he was taken to be weighed and measured. Once he was all cleaned up I continued cuddling him while James played with the placenta. Our midwife Kellie was keen for a show and tell but I opted out and just watched from afar as James picked it up and put his fingers in places I'd rather not know about. We decided against keeping it (although I did enquire about the possibility of having it encapsulated - unfortunately not an option at our hospital). In hindsight I regret not taking it home and planting it in our garden as it was such a vital part of Rhys' life while he was in my womb.

After all the excitement of the labour and delivery, our family of three was taken to a private room at the hospital. Due to Rhys' small size and as my milk hadn't come in, a feeding tube was inserted into his little nose. For the first few days he was tube fed a combination of my colostrum (as much as I was able to thumb-express between feeds) and formula to help him gain weight. By day 5 Rhys had enough of the tube and pulled it out himself! But by that stage my milk had come in and I was able to transition him to the breast exclusively. It was such a relief but also a lot of pressure on me to be solely responsible for him gaining weight.

By day 8 we were told Rhys only needed to either maintain his weight within the next 24 hours or gain a little extra to be discharged so I made it my mission to make this happen. Unfortunately I think I put too much pressure on myself and ended up with no milk! As if this wasn't upsetting enough, Rhys got really upset when I wasn't able to feed him and ended up pooping and peeing everywhere during a nappy change. Then on top of that, he knocked his belly button stump off! By this stage I was a blubbering mess. I was so run down after not sleeping for the past week so against my wishes, the nurse from the hospital's special care nursery took Rhys for the night and fed him the milk I had expressed earlier that day so I could get some much needed rest. He was back on the boob the next morning and fed really well so I was hopeful he hadn't lost weight and we could go home. James arrived mid-morning and we anxiously wheeled Rhys in for his weigh-in. By some miracle, and despite the horror of a night we'd just endured, he had gained 10 grams and we were discharged!

We left the hospital on July 10th, 9 days after Rhys was born, and finally took our baby boy home. He's such a good eater (has such a strong latch and suck) and really only cries when he's hungry, naked or needs a nappy change. After being home for 2 days we returned to the hospital for a follow-up weigh-in and were so happy to hear Rhys had gained 70 grams! We must be doing something right.

It's hard to believe but baby Rhys is now 2 weeks old! He's growing and changing every day and we couldn't be happier to finally have him here. Being a parent is the most amazing, challenging, scary, rewarding job in the world but I wouldn't want it any other way.

37 Weeks

I'd taken my 37 week/full term bump pic and typed up most of this blog entry two weeks ago but didn't get around to finishing and posting it before my beautiful baby boy was born! This is the last photo of me with my little man still in my belly. He arrived the next morning!

How far along: 37 weeks
How big is baby: Size of a watermelon (48cm from head to toe)
Total weight gain/loss:  + 4.5kg (10lbs)
Stretch marks: Still none to report (moisturizing my belly, hips and tatas religiously every night)
Maternity clothes:  Still mixing stretchy pre-pregnancy clothes with a few maternity pieces
Wedding rings on/off: On
Linea nigra: I finally have a very faint line below my belly button! After 9 months of pregnancy, I find this oddly exciting haha.
Sleep: Broken thanks to Braxton Hick's contractions
Food cravings or aversions:  Nothing out of the ordinary
Gender: BOY!
Movement:  He's a lot less acrobatic than usual but has less room to play in these days
Belly button: Out... but only just when I'm standing, and in when I'm laying down
Exercise: Getting out of bed is quite a workout on its own
Diet: Still eating small meals and snacks throughout the day
What I'm loving:  Reaching full term! After suffering a miscarriage only a month before this pregnancy and then having a few scares along the way, it's such a relief and blessing to have made it this far.
What I'm not loving: Braxton Hick's contractions, lightning crotch, round ligament pain, back spasms, sore boobies, lack of sleep, the list goes on...
What I miss:  Everything below my belly. Can't see a thing!
Sickness and symptoms: Heartburn, reflux, muscle spasms, insomnia
Notes:  My OB will likely remove the cervical stitch some time later this week but just have to see what baby boy is doing and whether he's gained any more weight as he was measuring a little on the small side at our last ultrasound.

Fetal size: 48cm total length
Fetal weight: 3kg (6.5lbs)

Your baby is now considered 'full term', even though your due date is still three weeks away. If you go into labour now, his lungs will likely be mature enough to adjust to life outside the womb and there will be little chance of complications as all other organs are fully developed.

36 Weeks

I can't believe I'm now officially 9 months pregnant! Only one more week of pelvic/bed rest 'til full term and surgery to remove the cervical stitch that's been keeping my bits together these past 9 months. James and I are so excited to be meeting our baby boy within the next month.

How far along: 36 weeks
How big is baby: Size of a honeydew melon (47cm from head to toe)
Total weight gain/loss:  I'm up 3.5kg (7.7lbs) from my pre-pregnancy weight and had a growth spurt this week! Hopefully that means baby boy did too.
Stretch marks: Still none to report (moisturizing my belly, hips and tatas religiously every night)
Maternity clothes:  Surprisingly I'm still able to wear some of my pre-pregnancy wardrobe. The pants I'm wearing in this week's bump pic are my size 8 skinny jeans (obviously with the button undone). I've really only worn one maternity skirt and pair of leggings - everything else has been pre-baby regular clothes that are super stretchy.
Wedding rings on/off: On
Linea nigra: Nope
Sleep: Not getting much thanks to regular Braxton Hicks contractions, an acrobatic baby and a bladder that always needs emptying
Food cravings or aversions:  I've had a thing for strawberries lately
Gender: BOY!
Movement:  Less than what I'm used to, which is a worry, but I think it's just due to him running out of room
Belly button: Out... but only just when I'm standing, and in when I'm laying down
Exercise:  Getting out of bed is quite a workout on its own
Diet: Still eating small meals and snacks throughout the day
What I'm loving: That we'll be meeting our little man in a matter of weeks
What I'm not loving: Braxton Hick's contractions, lightning crotch, round ligament pain, back spasms, sore boobies, lack of sleep, the list goes on...
What I miss:  The crazy acrobatic movements baby boy used to do on a daily basis. Now his movements are so subtle I barely feel them.
Sickness and symptoms: Heartburn, reflux, muscle spasms, insomnia
Notes:  I have my 36 week OB appointment on Wednesday and can't wait to see how big baby boy has grown since my last ultrasound. Sadly James is away working so won't be able to make it, but my parents are very excited that I've invited them along instead.

Fetal size: 47cm total length
Fetal weight: 2.6kg (5.7lbs)

Your baby weighs about six pounds and will gain approximately half a pound per week from now until birth. The protective fat layer will make up about 15 percent of his weight at birth. Even though his gums have ridges that look a bit like teeth, the real ones won't make their appearance until about four or five months after he is born. His cheeks are developing fat. The cheek muscles are also developing, creating that lovely chubby appearance. There isn't much room for him to move around anymore, although you will still be feeling regular movements.

35 Weeks

It's hard to believe there are just 2 weeks 'til full term and only 5 weeks 'til our baby boy's due date! The time really is flying and the excitement, anticipation and anxiety is building. James and I can't wait to meet our little man and are literally counting down the days. 35. Yep that's it. 35 weeks pregnant and only 35 days (give or take) until we'll be a family of 3.

We had an appointment last week with our OB to check on my cervical length and were so relieved to find it hadn't shortened since my previous measurement a couple of weeks earlier. It's good to know that my strict pelvic and bed rest is paying off. We found out babe is weighing in at 4lbs 8oz (2.04kg) and is still head down so fingers crossed he continues to gain weight and maintain his current position until his due date.

Because his head is putting pressure on my cervix, I've been battling Braxton Hicks contractions, lightning crotch and round ligament pain a lot more lately but have been prescribed medication to help ease the uterine muscle spasms and hopefully prevent pre-term labor.

Here's our beautiful baby boy, hiding behind his hands as usual and tucked away behind the umbilical cord. I swear he only sleeps (or pretends to) when the doctor is watching and every other minute of the day is bouncing around like a jelly bean!

How far along: 35 weeks
How big is baby: Size of a bowling ball (46cm from head to toe)
Total weight gain/loss: + 2.5kg (5.5lbs)
Stretch marks: Still none to report (moisturizing my belly, hips and tatas religiously every night)
Maternity clothes: Wearing stretchy pre-preg clothes mixed with a few maternity pieces
Wedding rings on/off: On
Linea nigra: Nope
Sleep: Not getting much thanks to regular Braxton Hicks contractions, an acrobatic baby and a bladder that always needs emptying
Food cravings or aversions: Nothing out of the ordinary
Gender: BOY!
Movement:  He's always wriggling around in there. Sometimes I only feel a subtle change of position, other times he nearly knocks the wind outta me!
Belly button: Out... but only just when I'm standing, and in when I'm laying down
Exercise:  Getting through the day is exercise enough
Diet:  Still eating small meals and snacks throughout the day
What I'm loving:  That we'll be meeting our little man in a matter of weeks
What I'm not loving: Braxton Hick's contractions, lightning crotch, round ligament pain, back spasms, sore boobies, lack of sleep, the list goes on...
What I miss:  Sexy time! But only 2 weeks 'til pelvic rest is lifted... and hell yeah we're counting!
Sickness and symptoms: Heartburn, reflux, muscle spasms, insomnia
Notes:  After much hesitation and consideration, I decided to fill the prescription given to me by my OB to treat the regular Braxton Hicks contractions I've been having. The benefits far outweigh the minimal risks and this medication can help prevent pre-term labor so it's definitely worth taking.

How big is my baby?

Fetal size: 46cm total length
Fetal weight: 2.3kg (5.2lbs)

Your baby will start with a period of rapid weight gain this week. From now until birth your baby will gain approximately one third of a pound per week.

Fat has continued to build up under your baby's skin, and is responsible for providing energy and regulating body temperature. These fat deposits have also changed the appearance of the skin, making it pinker (rather than red) and less wrinkled.

Fingernails are developed on the fingers, but may still be growing on the toes. Eyelids can be opened and closed and blinking is possible. The irises are also now light sensitive, and will dilate and contract depending on exposure to light.

34 Weeks

It's hard to believe how fast the time is flying. Our little man will be here in a matter of weeks! For so long it felt like I was wishing for the days to come and go quickly, but now I find myself wanting to freeze time. Still on strict pelvic and bed rest due to cervical shortening but it's all worth it for a healthy baby boy.

How far along: 34 weeks
How big is baby: Size of a rockmelon (45cm from head to toe)
Total weight gain/loss: + 2.5kg (5.5lbs)
Stretch marks: Still none to report (moisturizing my belly, hips and tatas religiously every night)
Maternity clothes:  Wearing stretchy pre-preg clothes mixed with a few maternity pieces
Wedding rings on/off: On
Linea nigra: Nope
Sleep: A couple hours, interrupted by the need to pee, another couple of hours, then woken by my active baby boy, and repeat, and so on and so forth.
Food cravings or aversions:  Nothing out of the ordinary
Gender: BOY!
Movement:  Not as obvious and often as they were but he has his moments. I'm getting used to his pattern of sleep and play time now.
Belly button: Out... but only just when I'm standing, and in when I'm laying down
Exercise:  I can hardly remember what this is, let alone find the energy to do it
Diet:  I eat when I'm hungry and until I've had enough but definitely smaller meals due to the onset of heartburn and reflux after eating
What I'm loving:  Next month we'll be meeting (or will already have met) our little man!
What I'm not loving: Braxton Hick's contractions, lightning crotch, round ligament pain, back spasms, sore boobies, lack of sleep, the list goes on...
What I miss:  Everything below my belly button lol
Sickness and symptoms: Heartburn, reflux, muscle spasms, insomnia
Notes:  I've washed and put away all of baby boy's clothes, toys and blankets, packed the hospital bag and written my birth plan (although how can you really plan for something that's completely out of your control?). With only a few weeks to go, James and I will be spending his next break putting the finishing touches on the nursery, installing the car seat and baby-proofing the house in preparation for our little man's arrival.

Fetal size: 45cm total length

Your baby weighs about five pounds now. By this time most of the lanugo (body hair) is gone. His immune system is no longer relying on the antibodies from the placenta. This self-immunity is important to protect your little one at birth and for the rest of your baby's life. The vernix (thick white layer of protection present on your baby's skin) is disappearing; however a little bit of it will still be left at birth. The digestive system is fully working by itself. Moreover he is peeing up to a pint of urine a day into the amniotic fluid. Even though the placenta is capable of supporting your baby until birth, it will start to age this week.

33 Weeks & Baby Shower

I had such a beautiful day on Sunday celebrating with my family and friends. My baby shower was a high tea held in the morning at our house so I didn't have to venture too far from bed. There was a table filled with delicious desserts and savoury snacks, including macarons, cupcakes, caramel tartlets, apple slice, meringue kisses, chicken drumsticks, meatballs and assorted sandwiches. Yum! Of course I had to try everything, more than once, and enjoyed every mouthful. My guests had a great time playing games and it was especially funny watching them guess what was in the (chocolate smeared) diapers being passed around the table.

Our baby boy received so many presents and we ended up with a closet full of the cutest clothes, and some big items including a portacot from my parents and a carseat from James' mum and dad. There's not much more we need to buy and no items to return so all in all we're very lucky.

I really enjoyed my baby shower and as my cousin Linda did such a fabulous job hosting, it meant I got to sit down and relax the entire time. A big thankyou to everyone who made it and to those who weren't able to but still sent such beautiful gifts. We're so grateful to have you in our lives.

How far along: 33 weeks
How big is baby: Size of a pineapple (44cm from head to toe)
Total weight gain/loss: + 2.5kg (5.5lbs)
Stretch marks: I can't see any and I even had James check below my belly button because I can no longer see what's going on down there and still none to report (I'm moisturizing my belly, hips and tatas religiously every night)
Maternity clothes: I wore a regular women's size small Supre dress for my baby shower but the fabric was stretchy and it was gathered at the sides so I'm still able to mix and match between regular clothes and maternity
Wedding rings on/off: On
Linea nigra: Still no sign of it
Sleep: Rare!
Food cravings or aversions: I've been eating ham, cheese and tomato sandwiches a lot lately
Gender: BOY!
Movement: Always. Every hour, on the hour!
Belly button: Out... but only just when I'm standing, and in when I'm laying down
Exercise: Ah no sir!
Diet: I indulged big time at my baby shower but otherwise I stick to eating small snacks
What I'm loving: How fast time is flying. Baby boy will be here soon!
What I'm not loving: Braxton Hick's contractions, lightning crotch, round ligament pain, back spasms, sore boobies, lack of sleep, the list goes on...
What I miss: My husband. He works a few hours from home for 9 days straight and is only home for 5 before he's gone again. It's getting much more difficult being apart as the pregnancy progresses, especially as there are things I just can't do on my own.
Sickness and symptoms: Heartburn, reflux, muscle spasms, insomnia
Notes: This week I'll be washing all of baby boy's new clothes and packing the hospital bag. Once this has been done I think I'll feel a bit better about things. Not that I want or expect to go into labour anytime soon, but if it happens at least I'll be organised.

Even though his bones are hardening, the skull is still not solid and the skull bones are not fused together. This will allow for his head to reduce its diameter as it passes through your birth canal. His brain is developing more distinct functions and is capable of controlling breathing, digestive functions and body temperature. He can now tell the difference between day and night. Lungs are almost completely ready for breathing on their own and if your baby is born now, he would need only a little medical support.

32 Weeks

Sorry this post is a little late. It's been quite a rollercoaster of a week for me thanks to an onset of some pretty severe Braxton Hick's contractions. They gave me quite a scare, as I was home alone and they lasted for around 5 hours, but thankfully no damage was done and I'm able to manage them now with adjusting positions, heat, massage and medication (if necessary).

Here's my 32 week bump, which as expected is bigger than ever and I'm really feeling it these days! I feel like I'm carrying around a sack of spuds. If I look tired here it's because I was. Lack of sleep means I'm walking around like a zombie and pretty sure I was still half asleep when I took these. Suppose it's something I should get used to with baby boy due in a matter of weeks!

Yesterday James and I had an appointment with our OB for the 32 week check-up. We were lucky enough to get another ultrasound and see our beautiful baby boy. After a few scares this week, it was such a relief to see that he's big and strong. Weighing in at around 1.7kg (3.7lbs), he's just about on track now with the average size for gestation at 32 weeks 3 days. He had previously been measuring small so it was great to see he's had a growth spurt since our last appointment. During the ultrasound he kept rolling his big bottom lip (I did this as a baby) and he's still looking just like his daddy. There's no mistaking paternity!

How far along: 32 weeks
How big is baby: Size of a squash (43cm from head to toe)
Total weight gain/loss: + 2kg (4.4lbs)
Stretch marks:  Still none to speak of (moisturizing my belly, hips and tatas religiously every night)
Maternity clothes:  I still have a few stretchy pre-pregnancy dresses that I can get away with wearing but feel much more comfortable in my maternity skirt and leggings
Wedding rings on/off: On and strangely they're loose on my finger
Linea nigra: Still no sign of it
Sleep: A thing of the past and not something I foresee in my future unfortunately
Food cravings or aversions:  I'm shocked (and a little bummed) that I haven't had any weird cravings because I thought that was part and parcel of pregnancy
Gender: BOY!
Movement:  According to my pregnancy app, baby boy sleeps 80-90% of the time. Pretty sure they meant somersaults! Unless he's the most active sleeper ever.
Belly button: Out... but only just when I'm standing, and in when I'm laying down
Exercise:  Ha! I barely have the energy to bath myself these days
Diet:  I can't consume much of anything thanks to the instant reflux and heartburn after eating but when I do have something I try to eat healthy
What I'm loving:  That we're in the home stretch and will be meeting our baby boy in a matter of weeks (preferably 5+)
What I'm not loving:  Braxton Hick's contractions, lightning crotch, round ligament pain, back spasms, sore boobies, lack of sleep, the list goes on...
What I miss:  Everything below my belly button. Can't see a thing!
Sickness and symptoms:  Apart from feeling completely exhausted 24/7 I'm not doing too bad
Notes:  My baby shower is this weekend! I can't wait to celebrate our baby boy's impending arrival with family and friends.

How big is my baby?

Fetal size: 43cm total length
Fetal weight: 1.7kg (3.7lbs)

Space inside your womb is becoming increasing scarce for your baby, making his movements less dramatic and much slower this week. The foetal position is becoming a familiar position for him. Your baby can now use all of the five senses. He is busy looking around, practising breathing, grabbing whatever is in reach, tasting amniotic fluid and listening to the sounds of both you and your partner's voice. Your baby will weigh about three and a half pounds at this point.

Maternity Photos

We're so excited to have all of the photos back from our maternity shoot and to share them with you. Mel did an amazing job and we couldn't be happier. You can check out her incredible work here. Please 'like' her page and show her some support. She will be photographing our baby boy for his newborn shoot in a couple of months and we can't wait!

I'll share a handful of the maternity photos in this post. But as there are so many, please click through to our Flickr album here to view them all.

31 Weeks

We had an appointment with our OB a few days ago to check on cervix length and our baby boy's growth. Happy to report that everything looked good, my cervix is still closed and bub is healthy and strong. Still looking like his daddy and sleeping with his hands around his face.

My bump is still sitting quite high and has definitely grown this week. Only going to get bigger over the next couple of months!

How far along: 31 weeks
How big is baby: Size of a pineapple (42cm from head to toe)
Total weight gain/loss: + 1.5kg
Stretch marks: None (moisturizing my belly, hips and tatas every night before bed)
Maternity clothes:  Most days I get away with wearing pre-pregnancy dresses with stretch but definitely finding my maternity leggings and skirts more comfortable
Wedding rings on/off: On
Linea nigra: No sign of it yet
Sleep: Broken. I get a couple of hours then wake up to use the bathroom. And repeat.
Food cravings or aversions: None
Gender: BOY!
Movement:  Lots, as per usual. Just when I think he's running out of room, he pushes out and makes more for himself!
Belly button: Out... but only just
Exercise:  James and I took Pepper for a walk on the beach on the weekend and within minutes I felt like I'd run a marathon. That was after taking about 10 steps. So yeah no actual exercise for me, besides the frequent bathroom trips and walks from the couch to kitchen.
Diet:  Heartburn and reflux is back so I'm eating smaller size meals and mostly soup these days
What I'm loving:  Seeing the nursery come together. The walls are painted, the furniture is in, just need to put the finishing touches on it.
What I'm not loving:  Not being able to get a full night's sleep. I've been feeling exhausted easily and without doing much of anything lately. Oh, besides growing an acrobatic baby boy...
What I miss:  Having the energy to put one foot in front of the other
Sickness and symptoms:  An update on my arm. It's been more than 2 weeks since the botched blood test for gestational diabetes screening and my arm is finally on the mend. The muscle spasms, nerve twitches and bruising are going away slowly but surely, and best of all I have no out of pocket expenses as pathology are covering all of my costs. As they should! I'm just thankful there's no permanent damage and our baby boy was unaffected by his mama's dramas.
Notes:  We found out at our OB appointment on Thursday that based on gestation and his measurements, our little man is on the small size. This could be for a number of reasons: our date of conception is incorrect, or he's just going to take after his parents and be a wee one. Either way, it's not a worry as he's still growing consistently every week and has no shortage of energy (that makes one of us!). As long as he continues to gain weight with each appointment, there's no cause for concern. But it probably means a later due date, so he should be arriving around the end of July.

The eyes are now fully formed and the eyelids have separated, allowing your baby's eyes to open. Once the eyes are open, your baby will start to see and focus (within a limited range).

Your baby now has a fully developed breathing rhythm and his lungs begin to prepare for breathing air in the outside world. Sucking and swallowing skills continue to develop in preparation for feeding. Your baby passes about half a litre of urine into the amniotic fluid each day.
The lanugo (body hair) is continuing to shed, although babies born prematurely may still have some of this at birth. Bones are busy hardening and preparing to support his body after birth. The adrenal glands, which produce those important hormones called steroids, have doubled in size over the last 10 weeks. Steroids are responsible for the growth and development of sex organs.
